Friday and Saturday!

So Friday was the last day of work. I am leaving Pacheia Ammos to travel to Venice and Sunday the family will arrive! (Minus Liss. I'll miiiiss you Liss!)

Today was just another busy day at work, though. More x-rays, yay!

Saturday dawned lovely and it was time for one last peek at the Pacheia Ammos before it was off towards the airport.

And two flights later I made it to Venice! Tonight I am just outside the airport waiting for the family, so there aren't too many picturesque things to see. But there's this lovely photo in my hotel!

Hope all is well at home!

Wednesday and Thursday

GWednesday and Thursday were spent working and hanging out. Work has been busy but today I got to take and develop x-Rays, which is quite time consuming but makes for interesting products.

Pretty Kitty found a new spot to nap...

... And then I found this flower on the way home!

But Thursday also included waffles! Amazing, delicious, chocolatey, ice creamy waffles. ^^

Then Angus took Ana and Sara and I up to Myrsini to have dinner with a visiting professor and his students. It was quite a lovely little place.

And it had an awesome view of the island.

Anna and Sara and I!

And then the artsy shot cause yay sunsets!

It was beauteous to watch though.

And there were pretty plants to peek past everywhere!

And then it got dark, hehe. Off to bed for one last day of work!

And On To Tuesday

Sunday dawned lovely but hot. The water looked lovely but I never quite made it to swimming.

I had a wander about town, but it was pretty quiet. The beach did slowly fill up though.

This boat was great. Someone's not been out in a while!

There's a lovely painted wall with Matala's slogan on it. "Today is life. Tomorrow never comes."

But then it was on to see the tombs!

There are no bodies in them, not to worry. But I did notice a couple that were filled in and/or still buried... But they were mostly pretty cool. Some have doorways and others have sort of eroded open with the wind and water over time.

A door!

This one had a second chamber through a second doorway. Most of these I had to crouch in to varying degrees in, but a couple you could stand fully in.

I also found a carved double axe! I suspect very strongly it is not ancient, but still cool! (Double axes are associated with the Minoans.)

This was the most elaborate tomb, with carved outlines of the niches and carved pillows for the entombed.

Others were designed for the bodies to be laid in sarcophagi type things and then covered.

This one was huge! The biggest one I saw.

I scrambled all the way up to the top so that I could see all the tombs and the view from up there was lovely, too.

But with the tombs having been seen, it was time to head onwards! The first stop on the way back was Phaestos, one of my favorite palace sites. Where I mostly played with the panorama function and tried to refrain from adding to the oodles of pictures I already have of the site.

This is the grand entrance to the left, which faces out on to this western court and theatral area.

The great storage magazines...

And the west court again! With raised processional walkways (or something of that sort.)

The central court, and one of the defining features of a Minoan palace:

Stairs! I do love stairs. These stairs were part of an older palace complex beneath the top one, and near to the location where the Phaestos disc was found.

Phaestos is in a lovely hilltop with good lines of sight in most directions.

From there we headed on to Gortyn. It has a very large basilica (which was unfortunately being worked on, so we couldn't see much).

And these fabulous old olive trees.

But the other big thing is a roman theater.

Yay panoramas!

It is most noted because it has a law code of Gortyn built into it in the back.

They've also have a couple nifty statues.

Monday and Tiesday saw us back to work. And Pretty Kitty back to napping. In chairs...

On water bottles...

And who knows where else. Freddy kept up his usual patrols, and continued to guilt people into feeding him.

All is going well though. The debate about the economy came to a head when they reached and agreement yesterday. Now it must be ratified by the Greek parliament, but it looks like Greece will stay in the Eurozone. For now the banks are still closed, I think, but it's not been a huge problem. Hope all is well at home!

To Saturday!

So I left you with Thursday... I decided not to do a super long post because I think this app struggles to upload so many pictures in one go. So two parts there will be! Thursday night we ended up hanging out at the Mochlos house that evening which is up on the hill and has a lovely view of the valley.

And then Friday! I came in to find Pretty Kitty in a new strange napping spot.

But she returned to her chairs soon enough.

And Freddy wandered around as usual, looking for a cool seat or someone willing to feed him. He's a sweet old man. The current best guess seems to be that he's somewhere around 18.

That afternoon we went over to see Myrtos and Pyrgos Myrtos.

Myrtos is most famous for the 'Goddess of Myrtos', a ceramic vessel of a woman that was found here.

The site was awesome and somewhat big, but as per the usual, you really have to walk around it to see it well!

There was lots of worked stone like this left at the site by the excavators. It was super cool to see!

Site site site!

This summer I have also discovered the wonders of panoramic photos. They're so nice for seeing lots at once!

Pyrgos Myrtos is another Minoan settlement site. With some more impressive architecture.

Lovely hallways...

A fabulous courtyard with a red stripe.

And stairs! I loves stairs.

It's got a pretty impressive view from its hilltop at that.

And then we got to Saturday! Saturday was a ride to the south coast and Matala. Where we stayed in a hotel with this lovely courtyard. There was so much green!

Matala is a bit of a hippy town. In that... Hippies used to live in the Roman tombs up on the cliff and that spirit lingers in the modern beach town. So all the roads and walkways were painted in big block pictures.

Of all sorts!

There's a pretty little beach and the distant hill where the tombs are.

We went a bit out of town for dinner and had a fabulous view of the coast.

The restaurant, Mystical View, is owned by two guys who used to run one in New York and the food was fabulous. There's this great old juniper in the middle of the courtyard, too. At least I think it's a juniper...

And then the sun set in all sorts of lovely colors!

We hung out back at Matala for a bit, where the hill is illuminated at night.

There's also this great boat-dock thing!

But... On to part two! I
